Thaksin speaks to the crowd

Monday, 3 November 2008 · 3 Comments

On the weekend, former Prime Minister Thaksin, who was ousted from office by a military coup in September 2006 and is currently living in London and seeking asylum, spoke by video link to supporters. According to news reports “tens of thousands” of Thaksin supporters (the UDD) gathered at a stadium here in Bangkok to listen to him speak.

Here is an excerpt from a Bangkok Post article talking about the effect of this broadcast.

Thailand’s “invisible hand”

Thursday, 23 October 2008 · 6 Comments

One very common idea in Thai political discussions for the past year or so has been to talk about the “invisible hand”. But we’re not talking Adam Smith and The Wealth of Nations here.

It’s something else entirely, but what exactly is it?

Monty Python Politics: When the Prime Minister is afraid of his own Army

Sunday, 19 October 2008 · 1 Comment

The quotes below are taken from a Bangkok Post newspaper story:

There have been rumours of a new coup since the leaders of the armed forces, led by Army Commander Gen Anupong Paojinda, appeared on a television programme on Thursday and called on Mr Somchai to take responsibility for the Oct 7 clashes between police and protesters. The military’s move was perceived as a threat to stage a coup.

….

Prime Minister Somchai has reportedly exercised extreme caution to avoid being captured to make way for a coup.

He took a chartered flight, instead of the usual military jet, to Ubon Ratchathani yesterday to visit soldiers wounded in border clashes with Cambodian troops.

Mr Somchai originally planned to travel to a hospital in Sapprasitthiprasong camp in the province with Gen Anupong and take an army helicopter to visit Thai troops near the Preah Vihear temple on the Thailand-Cambodia border.

He cancelled his visit to Pha Mor E Daeng for a situation briefing.

A military source close to Mr Somchai said the prime minister was urged to be cautious following Gen Anupong’s televised comments.

Monty Python Politics: when the mob thinks it rules

Tuesday, 7 October 2008 · 9 Comments

Tuesday in Bangkok has been a bit crazy. I spent the day cuddling with a naked cutie in my bed, and didn’t see the news till nearly 9 p.m. and it took a while to play catch-up.

Here’s what seems to have happened.

Under the Constitution of Thailand a new government has to read a ‘policy statement’ in Parliment within 15 days of forming in order to rule.

The PAD — The People’s Alliance for Democracy — in and effort to stop that policy statement from being read, surrounded the Parliament building to stop the legislature from meeting.
