A solar eclipse can be visible across Thailand from 4.05pm to 5.53pm Monday, the first day of the Lunar New Year.
The eclipse will be fully at 5.02pm, and 15 provinces can clearly see the phenomenon. They include Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Nong Khai, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Udon Thani, Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Chon Buri, Surat Thani, Phuket, Songkhla, Pattani and Chachoengsao.
Another solar eclipse will take place on July 22, 2009.
About thee weeks ago I wrote a blog about member clubs, and included a low quality photo of one of the Coyote dancers whom I identified as Nat of the Sky Club.
I returned to Sky with some friends on Friday night and saw Nat again, but it seems I may have gotten her name wrong. The music was loud, but I think she said that her name is Nan, not Nat.

For all that he hasn’t been able to join us so far, my partner on this blog is Penfold. He’s been in England for months now, and he’ll be back in Bangkok in about two weeks. The is having their usual month-end party on the 30th of January. It’s the birthday party for one of the owners of the bar, Daywalker, but such is the power of the Penfold persona that it has at times been co-billed as the “Welcome Back Penfold” party.
If you live in Thailand, you undoubtedly know about Santika. If you don’t live here and don’t know already, let me offer the barest of facts.
Santika was an upmarket and fashionable club here in Bangkok that was frequented primarily by young hi-so Thais and a fair number of foreigners. On New Year’s Eve the place was packed full — estimates of over a thousand people were reported in the newspaper — when it caught fire and burned. The last news report I read quoted 64 people dead and more than 200 hospitalized — many of them with critical injuries.
By any measure it was a tragic event. The fallout will probably be with us for a long time to come.
